"HOLIT Data Systems" (Ukraine, Kiev) have developed a motor-MUX for the popular LEGO Mindstorms NXT robotics set. Using motor-MUX you can directly control three connected motors using only one of the NXT’s sensor ports. The motors are connected to the MUX using standard NXT cables.

To get data from NXT controller you have to connect motor-MUX to one of sensor ports (1 – 4).

It is possible to connect several motor-MUXes to one sensor port simultaneously. One motor-MUX is directly attached to the NXT brick using the "NXT port” connector. To connect another motor-MUX, simply use a standard NXT sensor cable to connect that sensor’s "NXT port” connector to the previous sensor’s "MUX port” connector, and so on. Please note that it is important that each motor-MUX be assigned a unique address in the range of 1 to 127 to be able to access it properly. This can be done with a special NXT-G block. With 127 possible MUXes attached to a single sensor port, you could control up to 381 motors at simultaneously. If you did this with all sensor ports and connected motors to the NXT brick’s own motor ports, you could control 1524 motors at once!

NXT-G Block

The motors and motor-MUX are powered using an external power supply or battery pack using the power connector.

Program blocks list for motors connected to motor-MUX control:

1. Motor motor-MUX block (folder contains block is motor-MUX BlocksHDSMotor),

2. Move motor-MUX block (HDSMove).

3. Light motor-MUX block (HDSLight).

4. Rotation sensor motor-MUX block (HDSRotSensor).

5. Address motor-MUX block (HDSAddress).

To use these blocks, you will need to import them into your Mindstorms NXT-G programming environment. If the installed Mindstorms NXT-G version does not support block import (there is no Block Import And Export Wizard item in Tools menu), it is necessary to install Dynamic Block Update application located in the same folder.
